Updating companies relies on a unique key: the company's Sidely ID. This number lets the system recognize which record to update instead of creating a new one.
1. Export your current database
Before making any changes, start by exporting your data from the Sidely platform. This lets you work from a reliable, up-to-date database while keeping the existing IDs.
2. Add the column you need to your file
Open your exported file (Excel or CSV) and add the column you need (new information, additional field, update…).
Make sure to:
Follow the format of the existing columns
Not change the unique IDs (Sidely ID) already present
Only add useful information
3. Check data consistency
Before re-importing your file, take a few minutes to check:
That there are no duplicate rows
That the information is consistent
That the new columns are filled in correctly
4. Re-import your file into Sidely
Once your file is ready, import it back into Sidely.
Starting from an existing export lets the tool recognize the data and update existing rows instead of creating new ones.
Import from the Companies tab:
Then click From a file:
Once the file is imported, the system asks you to select the type of import you are doing: select the first icon, Companies.
The system then shows the fields in your current database.
The goal here is to match all your columns.
Click Automatic matching to line up the columns with your headers:
Check that the headers match correctly, and drag the Company ID field next to Sidely ID.
You can then click Check and then Confirm.
If your rows are green, click Next to import the information.
If your rows are orange or red, some information needs to be filled in the highlighted cells. You can edit the information directly in the table in front of you, so you don't have to redo the import steps.
5. Check the result after the import
After the import, quickly check:
That the new information has been taken into account
That no duplicates have been created
That your data remains clean and usable
FAQ
1. Why do I need to export before making changes?
It lets you work from an already structured database with the right IDs, which avoids duplicates.
2. What happens if I create a file from scratch?
You risk creating duplicates, because Sidely won't be able to link it to the existing data.
3. Can I add several columns at once?
Yes, as long as you follow the file structure and the expected formats.
4. How does Sidely recognize an existing row?
Thanks to the IDs in the exported file.
5. Is this a best practice for all imports?
Yes, it is the recommended method for any bulk update.
